Good-bye to Harry

Harry goes to his new home today. I feel a sort of hole in my gut when I think about this. Harry started the whole thing. He brought be back into the world of equines. He helped me to get in touch with the girl I once was. I owe him a huge debt of gratitude for that.

But he is going to a home with six children. He will have cows to live with and protect. He'll be ridden and brushed and fussed over... it's better for him than standing around in the paddock and being bullied by Cocoa.

Rachelle and I, and possibly Rachelle's mom, will drive Harry to Underhill and then take Dusty on to Tunbridge. Harry hates being trailered, but it's only for a little while and he'll find six eager children at the other end. He'll have Dusty to keep him company in the trailer. Dusty is an old hand at being trailered, so that will help Harry feel a little less anxious.

Dad's Tea, Really

Looks like Dad's tea isn't anything like what I thought.

Dad's Tea

My dad is in China trying to learn how to say "tea." Heh. There are easier ways to learn Chinese, you know, Dad. Is this the tea you bought? (If you click on it you can see information about it on this cool web site that I usually buy tea from.)

By the way, if anybody is interested in China from a 71-year-old lifetime adventurer's point of view, check out Dad's blog.

Not Copper, but...

Well, we thought Copper would be coming for a visit, but unfortunately he is having back trouble & needs a course of chiropractic before he can go anywhere. But his pasture mate, Max, may actually end up here sometime soon.

Max is a rescue horse that Kathie (Copper's owner) got to bring back to full health and possibly ride. But now that Copper, too, has health issues, Kathie is thinking that maybe the right horse for our farm is Max. However, we can't just take on another horse unless we can ride him/her.

Enter Elizabeth. Elizabeth is our housekeeper and doer-of-many-things from babysitting to helping keep the books. She used to ride and has been out of the horse world for many years. Being around here has started her thinking about maybe getting a horse herself. So I told her about Max.

Max was first diagnosed as being allergic to grass. Yes, grass. This is really bad for a horse, because horses need grass. The only way to manage the allergy is to soak the hay so it makes very little dust, give the horse lots of antihistamines, and hope that the lungs don't scar.

A second opinion said that Max had a lung infection. This is now gone (thanks to antibiotics), but Max's respiration is still somewhat labored & wheezy. He also pulled a tendon. So he needs the summer off, in some happy meadow somewhere, so he can recover and make somebody a good riding horse some day. His training is Western (yes!).

Seems to me that Max and Elizabeth are made for each other. Elizabeth doesn't want to go jumping into the horse world all at once, and having to take the summer just to help Max get better and to bond with him sounds like a great idea to her.

Stay tuned...

First Glimpse of Copper

This is Copper. He'll be visiting Chiron's Grove for about a week starting on May 18th. I rode him a little yesterday and had a great time. He is quick, smart, strong, confident--and a bit used to being able to get away with things. However, it is spring, and he hasn't been ridden since last October, so I'm curious to see how he settles down. He may be a great mount for Van.
